I never would have guessed that my school would be such a hot topic in the news this year. Granted, the first issue (I'm sure you all remember the senseless massacre of April 16 committed by one seriously off his rocker student) was a horrific tragedy, and far outweighs the latest news, but nonetheless my normally quiet and happy to hang in the wings of the public eye college is back in the headlines again, albeit this time completely indirectly.
When I attended Virginia Tech I had the privelege of watching Michael Vick play. Yes I am that old, and yes, at the time I mistakenly assumed it was a privelege. Nowadays, Michael Vick is doing much, MUCH more to embarass the rest of us who call Virginia Tech our alma mater. Obviously, our school holds no control over the idiotic, immature, and completely revolting actions of this current NFL star.
I think my anger actually comes more from the standpoint of an animal lover and animal owner. In my mind, Michael Vick has to be one sick, twisted (insert your choice of nasty cuss word here) to have been as involved (or involved AT ALL IN MY OPINION)with this disgusting crime known as dog fighting. The phrase "dog fighting" doesn't even do it justice. It is more "dog torturing" and "dog killing". And having been involved with animal rescue previously and knowing quite a bit about what goes on in animal control and their efforts to prosecute such things, I also know you have to be caught, practically red handed in order to be indicted and prosecuted. Dog fighting arrests are notoriously hard to prosecute and even harder to acheive a conviction on. To me, the ability to indict Michael Vick on these dog fighting charges, and more to be able to confirm details such as the fact that he was consulted before an injured dog was DOUSED WITH WATER AND ELECTROCUTED, simply proves how deeply he really was involved in all this. And to be involved to this degree of cruelty, killing dogs by slamming them against concrete repeatedly, hanging them, electrocuting them ... these are not the actions of a sports celebrity who "screwed up" by hanging with the wrong crowd. These are the actions of a killer. Someone who's mind is so twisted and off balance that they see nothing wrong with killing a being simply because that being is no longer a good investment. It was apparently too much to ask that someone who makes as much money as a world reknowned NFL superstar could afford to feed and shelter an animal. Guess the price of dog food is just going out the roof these days.
What I know is this. These animals are ruined by being trained for dog fighting. They are then tortured, and when they are no longer of any use they are killed. They have been ruined to ANY potential for happiness because they have been trained to a point that they cannot be adoptable pets later on.
So as for my two cents? Do not call yourself a Hokie Michael Vick. Do not call yourself a rolemodel, and do not dare to call yourself a man. You can simply call yourself what you are. A monster.

You are so right. He IS a monster.
My husband has literally gone on an email campaign, asking for every company/team Michael Vick is associated with to terminate their relationship with him and speak out against his actions. Of course they won't (citing "due process") but at least my hubby feels like he's doing something.
Vick is not a man. He is a monster. I hope he gets what's coming to him.
