Okay, so for the first time in a long time I've taken a big sigh of relief. We MAY have figured out what's going on with Alex. I say MAY because I've been here before, and thought we had the answer only to have the asthma/upper respiratory issues continue. So for now I'll keep my fingers crossed and just hope this works.
Last Friday Alex had his ear tubes put back in, and a camera was put down his throat and then up into his sinuses. His sinuses look fine, his throat is irritated and he may well still be having reflux. The problem with Alex is, as he started with reflux after his surgery at one month old he is literally so used to it he doesn't show any symptoms. Because his throat stays irritated, his sinuses constantly drain in an attempt to soothe his throat. This constant drainage causes mucus, which then builds up in his lungs and results in an asthma attack. Complicated isn't it? Regardless, the ENT is pretty confident that we can get him on reflux medicine and fix ALL these problems, even the asthma attacks.
On the one side I am a little peeved that we've been struggling with this for so long and something as simple as reflux medicine might fix it all. But on the other, at this point, I don't care what it is as long as it works!! I'm so tired of hearing my little one wheeze and cough and say "Mommy owwie, Mommy owie" while patting his chest. I'm tired of the way my heart hurts looking at the dark circles under his eyes because he just can't rest well while pumped up on asthma medicine.
So I am obviously thrilled that he is currently doing great, sleeping great, breathing fine, and playing hard like any normal 2 year old should be. With any luck he'll even be back to getting into mischeif any time now!!
